Greeneville Astros News Release

GREENEVILLE, TN - The Greeneville Astros (29-30) defeated the Princeton Rays (28-32) in the rubber match on Tuesday night to win the series. Although eliminated from playoff contention in the West Division, the win pulls the Astros within a game of a .500 record. Meanwhile, the loss for Princeton puts them 2.5 games behind Danville for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

The Astros scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and were fortunate to do so. Following a Delino DeShields, Jr. base hit and two walks of Jonathan Merritt and Telvin Nash, the Astros had the bases loaded with two outs for Roberto Pena. A pop up to the shortstop should have ended the inning, but a fielding error allowed two runners to score and give the Astros a 2-0 lead.

Princeton answered in the next half inning as Cesar Guillen led off with a solo homer. However, that would be the only run that the Rays would score despite picking up ten hits on the night.

After Greeneville starter Vincent Velasquez left the game with an apparent arm injury in the fourth inning, left-hander Travis Smink entered and pitched very well for the Astros. He went the next 3.2 innings, gave up no runs on four hits, and had three strikeouts as he earned the win.

Brian Streilein came on in the eighth inning and got his fourth save of the season. He gave up two hits, walked one, and had two strikeouts.

The Danville Braves will be making their annual trip to Pioneer Park to begin a three-game series with the Astros on Wednesday night at 7:00pm. Walgreens will be sponsoring Super Heroes Night, and any fans wearing a super hero costume will get into the game free. In addition, Walgreens is also providing an 8x10 team photo giveaway as fans enter the gates.
