Round Rock Express News Release

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros announced tonight that the club has placed left-handed pitcher Tim Byrdak on the 15-day DL and has optioned right-handed pitcher Sammy Gervacio to Triple A Round Rock. To take Byrdak's and Gervacio's roster spots, the team has recalled right-handed pitcher Wilton Lopez and purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Gustavo Chacin. The announcement was made by General Manager Ed Wade.

Byrdak, 36, has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right hamstring strain. He has made 13 appearances this season, posting a 1-0 record and a 5.23 ERA (6ER/10.1IP).

Gervacio, 25, made the Astros Opening Day roster for the first time in his career and posted a 12.27 ERA (5ER/3.2IP) in six games. He spent 18 days on the DL earlier this season with right rotator cuff inflammation.

Lopez, 26, went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (3ER/6IP) and five strikeouts in four relief outings for Houston earlier this season before being optioned back to Round Rock on April 25. In three relief appearances for Round Rock, Lopez went 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA (3ER/6IP). He picked up the win earlier tonight vs. Nashville after tossing a scoreless inning.

Chacin, 29, owns a 1-1 record and a 3.65 ERA (10ER/24.2IP) in five starts for Round Rock this season. This is his first appearance on a Major League roster since starting five games for Toronto in 2007. In four Major League seasons with Toronto (2004-07), Chacin owns a 25-15 record and a 4.18 ERA (154ER/331.2IP) in 58 career appearances, all starts.

With the addition of Chacin, the Astros 40-man roster now stands at 40.
