GREENEVILLE, TN - Greeneville Astros outfielder Hector Roa has been named the Appalachian League Player of the Week by MiLB.com for the week of July 6-July 12. Over seven games during that span, Roa batted .407 (11-for-27) with three runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI, and one walk with a SLG of .852 and OPS of 1.280.
This marks the sixth time in club history the Greeneville Astros have earned league player of the week honors. Two of those have come over the past couple of weeks as Astros' first baseman Connor Goedert was last week's recipient. Prior to Goedert, the last Greeneville Astros player to receive the honor was shortstop Jonathan Merritt during the final week of the 2010 season. The last time the Astros had two players of the week in the same season was 2008 when outfielders Frank Almonte and Nathan Metroka each took the honor.
Roa, who was born in Washington, D.C., was originally signed by the Houston Astros as a non-drafted free agent on June 29, 2012. The 20-year-old spent that season and part of the next with the Dominican Summer League Astros where he became a DSL All-Star. The rest of 2013 and the beginning of 2014, he played with the Gulf Coast League Astros. Then, for the final 29 games last season, Roa was in Greeneville where he hit .236 with four doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 13 RBI.
This season, Roa rejoined the Greeneville club after a four-game stint with the Short-Season A Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League to start the year. Over nine games since his return, his three home runs lead the team while his SLG (.676) and OPS (1.038) are second on the Astros only to Goedert.
