Greeneville Astros News Release

Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros (22-18) defeated the Kingsport Mets (15-25) on Tuesday night at Hunter Wright Stadium, 6-5, to win the rubber match and claim the three-game series. It was the Astros' 14th game of the season decided by a single run and their eighth victory in such games, giving them the most in the Appalachian League in each category.

Shortstop Miguelangel Sierra, who went two-for-three on the night, got the Astros started with leadoff solo homer in the first inning. It was the 18-year-old's 11th home run of the season, tying him for the league lead.

Catcher Gabriel Bracamonte kept the momentum going for the Astros in the second inning with a RBI triple following a Jonathan Arauz leadoff walk. Then, Bracamonte scored on a throwing error as Frankeny Fernandez stole second base after getting on with a walk.

Trailing 3-0, the Mets responded in the bottom of the second with four scores to take the lead. Two runs came on a Dionis Rodriguez home run. Then, with two outs, Jose Miguel Medina scored on an Astros fielding error followed by a Reed Gamache RBI single.

The Mets lead was short-lived as the Astros tied the game up, 4-4, in the top of the third on a Bracamonte sacrifice fly. The score had previously been set up by a Connor MacDonald single and one of two Chaz Pal doubles on the evening.

Two innings later, in the sixth, the Astros broke the tie to regain a lead they would not relinquish. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jonathan Matute came through on a clutch two-run single to give the Astros a 6-4 advantage.

The Mets did manage to add one more run in the seventh inning on a Rodriguez RBI single, but the tying run ended up being stranded at second.

Astros reliever Devin Raftery entered the game in the ninth inning and picked up his first save after allowing one hit and striking out three. Meanwhile, Lucas Williams was credited with his first win after allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings in relief.

The victory leaves the Astros with a season record of 4-3 against the Mets with four more games yet to be played later in August.

Wednesday will be a league-wide off day, but the Astros will return home on Thursday at 7:00pm to begin a three-game series against the Bristol Pirates. It will be Military Appreciation Night at Pioneer Park as left-handed pitcher Ben Smith will get the start for the Astros.
