Greeneville Astros News Release

Danville, VA "" In their final road game of the regular season on Saturday night at Dan Daniel Memorial Park, the Greeneville Astros (35-27) were defeated, 3-1, by the Danville Braves (26-33) in a game that featured good pitching by both teams. Despite the loss, the Astros remain just a half-game behind the Kingsport Mets (35-26) for first place in the Appalachian League West Division and two games ahead of the Elizabethton Twins (33-29) for the final playoff spot in the division.

While the game was controlled by the pitchers on each team, it began with each team scoring early. Tanner Mathis hit a lead-off single for the Astros in the top of the first inning. Then, after a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball allowed him to move over to third, Chase McDonald picked up a RBI on a ground out that gave the Astros a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Braves' first three batters loaded the bases with a hit and two walks. Then, the Astros turned a double play on a ground ball to shortstop Thomas Lindauer, but one run scored on the play. With a runner still at third, an Astros wild pitch allowed the Braves to score again and take a 2-1 lead. The next inning, the Braves got a lead-off single from Blake Brown before he also stole second base. Then, Seth Moranda singled to bring Brown around and put the Braves on top, 3-1.

Moranda's second inning hit would end up being the last hit of the night for the Braves, but it was all they needed. The Astros were only able to get two more hits through the rest of the game, a single in the fifth inning and another in the eighth, as the Braves pitching staff led their team to victory.

Jared Dettmann (2-4), Danville's starting pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts as he earned the win. He was followed by Ryan Gunther, who pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and left without giving up a hit. Finally, Michael Swanner entered for the final 2.0 innings and gave up one hit while striking out two in picking up his fifth save of the season. For Greeneville, left-hander Christopher Lee (2-2) gave up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts over 5.0 innings while also walking three. Then Kevin Ferguson, Gerardo Ramirez and Chris Munnelly each held the Braves hitless as they all pitched an inning apiece out of the bullpen.

With the Astros concluding their road portion of the schedule against the Braves, they will return home to Pioneer Park on Sunday to begin a three-game series with the Bluefield Blue Jays. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
