Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (26-22) shutout the Burlington Royals (20-28) on Sunday night at Pioneer Park, 6-0. It was the Astros' fourth shutout win of the season as they pulled within one-and-a-half games of the Appalachian League West-leading Elizabethton Twins (28-21).
The Astros were led by the top of their order all night as the first three hitters in the lineup collected two hits and scored two runs each. Edwin Medina went two-for-three in the leadoff spot, scored two runs, and had a stolen base. Meanwhile, Sean McMullen and Yonathan Mejia each went two-for-four, scored two runs, and had one RBI apiece.
Although the Astros were in control most of the way, the Royals began the game with a leadoff double by Logan Moon and a Manny Olloque single to put runners at first and third with no outs. However, Astros' left-hander Reymin Guduan ended the Royals biggest threat of the night as he struck out the next batter and then forced Brian Fletcher to ground into double play to escape the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the first, the Astros took a lead they would never relinquish. Their first run came when Medina headed home on a passed ball for the first of his two scores. Then, Jacob Nottingham added two more runs on a two-run single to put the Astros up, 3-0.
Holding a three-run lead, Guduan only gave up two more hits and two walks against the Royals as he pitched through the fifth inning. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, he got a little more cushion.
Medina led off the fifth for the Astros with a double and McMullen followed with another double to bring in a run. Then, two batters later, Hector Roa hit a sacrifice fly to add a score and give the Astros a 5-0 lead.
Guduan, who had four strikeouts and earned the win, was relieved by Elieser Hernandez in the sixth inning. Over the next three innings, Hernandez helped the Astros continue to shut down the Royals as he only allowed one hit and one walk while picking up two strikeouts.
The Astros tacked on one final run on a Yonathan Mejia solo homer in the eighth inning. Then, Astros' reliever Aaron Greenwood came on to finish the game with a scoreless ninth and conclude the shutout.
The Astros face the Royals in game two of their three-game series on Monday night at Pioneer Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
