Astros Announce 2015 Game Schedule

November 21, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Greeneville Astros News Release

GREENEVILLE, TN- The Greeneville Astros have released the dates for their 2015 schedule, which will mark their 12th season in the Appalachian League. The slate features 34 home games at Pioneer Park in addition to 34 games on the road throughout the Appalachian League beginning in late June and continuing through the beginning of September.

The Astros, who finished 32-34 during the 2014 regular season, just missed consecutive appearances in the Appalachian League playoffs when they were eliminated at the hands of the eventual champion Johnson City Cardinals during the penultimate game of the regular season. They will begin their quest to return to the postseason in 2015 with an exciting split series against the Bristol Pirates.

The Opening Day road game against the Pirates will be on Tuesday, June 23rd, two weeks after the first day of the First-Year Player Draft. It will be the tenth time in their history the Astros will open the season on the road and their fourth time to open with a game at Bristol. Game two will also be hosted by Bristol before the split series heads to Greeneville.

The Astros will have their home opener at Pioneer Park on Thursday, June 25th as they host the Pirates at 7:00pm with a spectacular Opening Day Fireworks display immediately following the game. Then, the Astros will host the Danville Braves in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night and going through Sunday.

It will be the first of four Friday home games, six Saturday home games, and eight Sunday home games. That means over half the Astros' home games in 2015 will take place on weekends, making it easier for fans to make arrangements to attend.

The Astros will conclude June and head into July with a three-game road trip to face the Princeton Rays. It will be the last time the team makes an overnight trip for over a month.

On Thursday, July 2nd, the Astros will return home for a split series with the Elizabethton Twins in which they will visit Joe O'Brien Field on July 3rd only to return home on Saturday for their annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration game. It will be the sixth time in club history that the Astros will be hosting the Twins for this occasion.

While most Saturday games will be scheduled for 6:00pm, the game on the Fourth of July will be planned for a 7:00pm start due to the postgame fireworks.

Two three-game sets at the division rival Kingsport Mets and Johnson City Cardinals will follow the July 4th game before the Astros return home on Saturday, July 11th to host a three-game series against the newest team in the Appalachian League, the Pulaski Yankees. Then, an off day will immediately follow on July 14th, which will also be the day of the 86th Major League Baseball All-Star Game hosted by Cincinnati.

When the Astros return to the field, they will visit the Cardinals again for another three-game series to give them six games over ten days in Johnson City. However, the Astros will then begin a 10-game homestand, the longest in team history.

The 10-game homestand will begin on Saturday, July 18th with a three-game series against the Kingsport Mets. That will be followed by two more three-game sets against the East Division Bluefield Blue Jays and Burlington Royals. Then, they will complete the homestand hosting the Mets for one game on Monday, July 27th.

The Astros will make their final trip to face the Bristol Pirates in a three-game series running from July 28th through July 30th. Then, the Astros will hold another split series with the Kingsport Mets that will take them into August and the second league-wide off day on Monday, August 3rd.

When the Astros return, they will hit the road for three nights against the Blue Jays in Bluefield, WV. It will be the first of four consecutive weeks in August in which the club will have overnight road trips.

When they return from Bluefield, they will host the Bristol Pirates from August 7th-8th for their final Friday and Saturday home games of the season before concluding the split series in Bristol on Sunday. Then, they will begin another split series with Elizabethton in which the Astros will host the middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday, August 11th.

On Thursday, August 13th, the Astros will visit the Pulaski Yankees for the very first time and then return home on Sunday, August 16th for their final three games against the Johnson City Cardinals.

The third and final league-wide off day will take place on Wednesday, August 19th. Then, the next day, the Astros will make their longest road trip of the season to visit the Braves in Danville, VA.

As the Astros head down the stretch in search of one of two playoff spots in the West Division, an important divisional four-game homestand will await them. Beginning on Sunday, August 23rd, they will face the Elizabethton Twins in a three-game set and will follow that with one final game versus the Kingsport Mets to conclude their divisional game schedule.

The Astros' final road trip will be to Burlington, NC to face the Royals beginning Thursday, August 27th. Then, they will conclude their home schedule by hosting the Princeton Rays for three games ending with the regular season finale on Tuesday, September 1st.

The two teams with the best win-loss percentage in both the East and West Divisions, at the conclusion of the 68-game regular season, will qualify for the playoffs beginning on September 3rd.

In the first round of the playoffs, each division leader will face the second place finisher in their division in a best-of-three series. Game one will be at the home of the second place finisher and will conclude with game two and game three, if necessary, at the home of the division winner. The winner of the series will earn the right to play in the Appalachian League Championship Series.

Following the completion of the first round, the two winning teams from the first round will square off in a best-of-three playoff that will begin at the home of the westernmost club. The Championship Series will conclude with game two and game three, if necessary, at the home of the easternmost club.
