January 14, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Question from Chuck from Vermont (and many others): "Would you please comment on the fight that happened in the Vermont/Manchester game this weekend?"

Answer: Chuck and others. Thank you for your calls and emails. There are certainly impassioned fans in New England. First, let me say that there is no excuse for what happened in the game between the Frost Heaves and the Millrats It was an aberration. It should not have happened.

There are fights and brawls in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NCAA. It is not new and it is never right. But it happens. The ABA is designed to be fan-friendly, family-friendly; the games are affordable and youth is one of our primary fan bases. Our owners, management, coaches and players are very aware of this and are eager to provide a maximum positive experience for all who attend ABA games.

ABA players are paid a fraction of what major league athletes are paid so they play for the "love of the game." Their travel is not easy, they endure a lot just in order to compete. These two teams had just returned from exhausting trips to Halifax and Singapore (long flights, difficult travel). But, the teams were there ready to compete and to give 110% for their teams and the fans. But, emotions got totally out of hand which resulted in the inexcusable behavior of several players.

Again, there was no excuse for it and immediately both teams and the league took action to remedy the situation including releasing and suspending players. Vermont and Manchester both run quality organizations; the ownership, management, coaches and the teams were totally surprised that it got so out of hand. It is very unlikely to happen again. But as I said, as long as you have these young, emotional, dedicated athletes, we have to be prepared for isolated incidents like this and do what we can to calm things down before these incidents erupt. On behalf of the two teams and the ABA, we apologize to all who attended and watch the game on PlayON! Sports. And we do appreciate the comments and questions. If you have a question, email conniejoenewman@aol.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
