September 16, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Manon, Montreal: "I am a woman sportswriter and I'd like to know if there are any chances that one day a WABA league will exist?"
Answer: Manon. Thank you for the question. The ABA has been concentrating primarily on its expansion in the United States, Canada and Mexico with a goal of about 100 teams in the next 3 years. We have given consideration to doing a similar model for professional women basketball. There is no doubt that there is a tremendous amount of talent available and getting better everyday. And there is no doubt the fans enjoy women's high school, college and professional basketball. It is fast-paced, exciting and the skill levels of today's women players are extraordinary. With the 3-D rule and other ABA rules, it might even be better.
So, we will definitely consider it. If there are others out there that might be interested, I would like to hear from you and perhaps we can accelerate the day when fans can enjoy exciting WABA professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices. If you have a questions, email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
