Armada Victorious in Season Opener

St. George, Utah. June 7, 2007: Behind the brilliant pitching of Jeff Heaverlo and the booming bat of OF Chris Klemm, the Long Beach Armada defeated the St. George Roadrunners in the season opener by a score of 7-3 in front of 1807 fans.

Heaverlo was staked to an early lead by Klemm's mammoth 2-run shot in the third that went over the 16 foot high right center wall and on to Highway 15. Heaverlo then went on to strike out 11 in six innings and did not give up a hit until one out in the 6th when St. George shortstop Albert Jones blasted a home run off the scoreboard to cut the gap to a single run.

The Roadrunners then took advantage of a couple of Armada throwing errors in the 7th to take a 3-2 lead as the Roadrunners starter, ex-major leaguer Mark Woodyard, limited Long Beach to just the pair of runs through six innings. The lead wouldn't hold up though as the Armada relief tandem of Richard Fischer and Dane DeLaRosa shut the door while the Armada bats exploded for five runs in the last two innings off the Roadrunner bullpen.

Rookie Kirt Gross, son of ex-major leaguer Wayne Gross, had a two-run single to knock in a pair in the eighth and then DH Jason Mooneyham added a 2-RBI triple in the 9th to put the Roadrunners away.

Armada pitchers combined for 15 Ks while walking only 2 and gave up only 4 hits. On offense OF Chris Wakeland,, 1B Jaime Martinez, Mooneyham, and Klemm all had two hits a piece. The Armada face the Roadrunners again on Friday night at 7:05 P.M. The game will not be available on-line, only via local AM radio.
