SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (August 8, 2015) - Ahead of the club's final match of a three-match road swing, Arizona United SC sits nine points out of a playoff spot with eight matches remaining on the schedule. Earning the final playoff spot seems like a daunting task, but Arizona United SC head coach Michael Dellorusso is thinking small.
"It's about concentrating on the details," Dellorusso said. "And it's about, in training, going out and trying to win every activity that you do and be the best at every activity you do. ... You hold yourself to that standard so that it's nothing new when the weekend comes."
Arizona (7-12-1) kicks off against LA Galaxy II (11-7-3) on Sunday, August 9 at 4 p.m. The match stream can be viewed at ArizonaUnited.com. In their previous meeting, way back on April 2, United got the better of Los Dos in a 2-1 win. During that match, LA scored first before Dennis Chin and Long Tan each tallied a goal to earn the club three points.
"That was one of our better performances," said Arizona United SC midfielder Scott Morrison. "If we can just go back and deliver that same type of performance, then we'd be happy with that."
Both clubs have changed a bit since that last meeting, in terms of the roster and their respective positions on the table. Galaxy II sit comfortably in a playoff spot with 36 points in 21 matches, good for second place in the Western Conference. United is in 11th place with 22 points in 20 matches.
And both clubs come into Sunday struggling a bit. United has lost its last five matches, including two matches in three days at Oklahoma City and Tulsa during last weekend's road trip. Galaxy II has lost its last two matches, both shutouts, at the hands of Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and Oklahoma City Energy FC.
"They're a group that likes to play (and) likes to interchange," Dellorusso said. "They're good going forward. So we know what we have to deal with; it's just about how we deal with it."
Added Morrison: "We want to get three points. We want to be better than (LA). But we have to remember the details going into that process. So doing what you do individually. What your role is for the team. Winning the battle against whoever you're up against."
