SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - An early first-half goal was all Austin Aztex needed in a 1-0 win over Arizona United SC. The season series between the two teams ends in a 2-2-0 split.
"We forced them to play wide defensively," said Arizona United SC head coach Michael Dellorusso. "But when you break down four and a half minutes in and give them a chance, we put ourselves in a hole we couldn't get out."
Austin's Kris Tyrpak opened the score sheet when he snuck in behind the defense and directed home a header in the fifth minute to make the match 1-0.
Arizona United SC (7-10-1) had its chances throughout the match. In the 15th minute, first-time starter Jordan Rideout got a header on frame, but was denied by Aztex goalkeeper Devin Perales.
More than ten minutes later, forward Brad Stisser had his own opportunity on frame, but his shot from distance was denied. Stisser would get another shot on frame in the 32nd minute, but Perales stepped up again and denied the scoring opportunity.
United continued the pressure in the second half, but didn't get their shots on frame. Stisser's attempt right out of the half was wide of the net. Dennis Chin's opportunity in the 65th minute sailed over the crossbar. And in the 88th minute, Jonathan Top's last-ditch effort smacked into the near left side of the net.
"We fought hard but it didn't go our way," said forward Jordan Rideout. "We've got to finish our chances, but we are coming together."
Arizona United SC goes back on the road for a difficult three-match road trip. Two of those three matches will come in a three-day stretch. United's next home match will be on August 15 against OC Blues FC.
