Arizona Sting News Release

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting General Manager and Head Coach Bob Hamley announced the Sting have signed rookie defenseman Allan Downey and forward Jamie Rooney to contracts.

The Sting selected Downey with the 56th overall pick (4th round) in the 2007 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft on Sept. 1. The Waterloo, Ontario native led Mercyhurst College to the 2007 NCAA D-II National Championship game while serving as team captain and guiding one of the top defensive units in the country. He also recorded three goals and five assists in 2007 as a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks of the OLA.

"We are excited to see Allan compete at training camp," said Hamley. "He has the potential to become a very good player in the NLL."

The Sting also signed forward Jamie Rooney. Rooney played for the Wellington Aces of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Senior B Series this summer. Despite playing in only nine games for the Aces, Rooney ranked fourth in the league in scoring with 38 points (17G, 21A).

Arizona opens the 2008 NLL season against the Calgary Roughnecks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 at Jobing.com Arena as it looks to defend its West Division title.
