Arena Football on ESPN
December 20, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
Birmingham, Ala. - The AFL has announced a five-year agreement with ESPN to air the league's regular season and postseason games on its family of networks in 2007. The network is scheduled to air 17 regular-season home games and nine playoff games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.
"This is fantastic for the sport of Arena Football," said Alabama Steeldogs Managing Partner Scott Myers. "Although we will not be featured in a broadcast, it will surely provide additional exposure for the Steeldogs."
As part of the agreement, ESPN has purchased a minority share of the AFL organization. The network and AFL officials have also agreed to schedule Monday night primetime games in an effort to provide fans with professional football year-round.
Former Steeldogs Bobby Keyes, Terrell Browden and James Clark all signed with AFL teams this off-season that will be featured in match-ups on ESPN's family of networks. Keyes' Dallas Desperados and Browden's Colorado Crush will each be featured in four televised games during the AFL season. Clark's Georgia Force squad is scheduled for one televised game.
The first ESPN broadcast of AFL games will take place on ABC on Sunday, March 4, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. when the defending ArenaBowl champion Chicago Rush take on the Kansas City Brigade. That match-up will be followed by the Dallas Desperados facing the New York Dragons.
