Another Fast Start for Pride Paves Way to 5-3 Win over Riveters

Chalk it up to another strong start by the Boston Pride.
Early goals by Carlee Toews and Tori Sullivan sent the Boston Pride on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Metropolitan Riveters on Sunday at Warrior Ice Arena. The win is Boston's seventh consecutive to start the season. Compared to Saturday's game, this was a much tighter affair. The teams were each credited with 46 shots on goal.
The fast start was typical of the undefeated Pride, who have scored first in every game in 2019-20.
Toews scored on a deflection of Jenna Rheault's shot 2:30 into the first period, while Sullivan scored less than four minutes later to give Boston a 2-0 lead after one.
Both teams took an unusually high amount of penalties in today's game. This gave each team an opportunity to flex the muscles on their special teams. Boston's power play unit capitalized three rimes.
The teams played even through three-quarters of the second period, but once again, the Pride's vaunted power play made its mark. Power play goals late in the period by Mallory Souliotis and Lexie Laing sandwiched a goal by Metropolitan's Kendall Cornine - her fifth in five NWHL games.
As this year's edition of the Riveters always does, the visitors put in a 60-minute effort and never gave up. Down 5-1 in the third period after a Boston goal by Jillian Dempsey, the Riveters scored twice. At 10:35, Brooke Avery scored her first NWHL goal. Riveters captain Madison Packer added a power play goal in the final minutes.
Lovisa Selander continued to play splendidly for the Pride, stopping 43 of 46 shots. As she did on Saturday, Riveters goalie Sam Walther made several big stops to keep her team in the game.
Like the rest of the NWHL, both teams now have an extended break before their next games. The Pride play on Nov. 16 at home against the Buffalo Beauts at 6:30. The Riveters are off until they face the Pride again in Boston on Nov. 30 at 6:30.
