Annual Hank Aaron Classic Starts Monday

MOBILE, AL- The pairings and game times have been announced for the 2007 Hank Aaron Classic, the premier high school baseball tournament in Alabama. Listed below are the first round pairings, and the host sites for the first round games. Each of the 16 participating local teams play a game at Hank Aaron Stadium, home of the Mobile BayBears, the Arizona Diamondbacks Double-A Affiliate.
There are awards given out after the final game of the tournament. The Jake Peavy MVP Award has been given in recent years to the player who excels most. Offensively, the Chris Boyette Silver Slugger Award is awarded to the most outstanding hitter in the tournament. Named after the former Fairhope High School All-American, who died in a car accident five years ago, the BayBears make a $500 donation to the Chris Boyette Scholarship Fund in the name of the award winner. A local pitcher has also been recognized with the Larry Andrews Award for the last two years. All award winners, and tournament winners are listed below.
The Hank Aaron Classic has featured many high school players who have gone onto play professionally. In addition to San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, other players include Damien Jones (Braves), Ryan Hannaman (Orioles), Josh Touchtone (Devil Rays), Brett Parker (Indians), Michael Machan (Braves), Larry Jones (Twins) and Clark Girardeau (Padres). University of West Virginia quarterback Patrick White was the Hank Aaron Classic MVP in 2004, while playing for Daphne High School. Each year 16 schools and over 300 players participate in the Hank Aaron Classic.
