Angel City FC News Release
LOS ANGELES - Angel City Football Club (ACFC) announced today that the team has acquired midfielder Meggie Dougherty Howard via trade with San Diego Wave FC. In exchange, San Diego will receive $40,000 in allocation money.
"I'm very excited for this opportunity," said Dougherty Howard. "The team is headed in a great direction and I'm looking forward to being a part of Angel City's success. LA is a fantastic sports city with smart and enthusiastic fans. I'm thrilled to be a part of it!"
"We're really glad we're bringing Meggie into the fold," said ACFC General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano. "She's a player who has good experience in this league and someone we think will fit into our style of play nicely as well. Her ability to hold the ball and add an attacking versatility to our midfield will provide another dimension to the roster."
Dougherty Howard spent the 2023 season with San Diego, appearing in 17 total matches in all competitions for the NWSL Shield winner, after signing with the club during the 2023 free agency window.
Prior to her move to the West Coast region of the NWSL, Dougherty Howard spent two seasons with the Orlando Pride, where she tallied 2,717 minutes on the pitch, earning three goals. She made her 100th NWSL appearance in all competitions in 2022 while in Orlando, appearing in 43 total matches for the Pride.
Dougherty Howard, originally from Largo, Florida, was drafted in the 2017 NWSL Draft out of the University of Florida by the Washington Spirit. Prior to being drafted, she competed on the Spirit Reserves 2015 and 2016 summer rosters. As a Florida Gator, she compiled 14 goals and 25 assists in 94 appearances. In her senior season in 2016, she led the team with 12 assists and eight goals. She was named a 2016 All-American, earned 2016 SEC Tournament MVP, and was a two-time All-SEC honoree.
