Bellingham Slam News Release
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam couldn't overcome the hot shooting of Vancouver guard Andre Murray, as they fell to the Volcanoes, 109-100, in International Basketball League play at Clark College on Saturday.
Murray finished with 33 points, including a 10-for-11 performance from the field in the first half.
The 100 points scored was the smallest point total ever posted by the Slam in an IBL game and the fewest since a 101-83 loss to the King County Royals in an American Basketball Association contest on January 13, 2007.
Most of the first half was very competitive, with eight lead changes before Vancouver began to pull away in late in the second quarter. They led 66-59 at the half.
Things slowed down in the third quarter, as both teams combined for just 35 points. Bellingham was unable to make any headway with the deficit, and trailed 84-76 going into the final quarter.
The Slam briefly made things interesting in the fourth quarter, as they used a scoring burst to pull within four, at 93-89 with 7:37 left. But things unraveled after that, as the Volcanoes scored the next 11 points and put the game out of reach.
Despite the loss, the Slam took the season series from the Volcanoes, 3-2, with each team holding serve on their home court.
Jacob Stevenson led the Slam with 28 points, while Michael Duty finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Murray's 33 points paced Vancouver and led all scorers. Devin Uskoski also had a big night with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
The Slam stay on the road and will next face the Olympia Reign on Saturday, June 11. A 7 p.m. tip-off is set at Evergreen State College.
