Amarillo Venom News Release

Amarillo, TX 5/27/10 -For the second time this season the Amarillo Venom (9-1) will face the only team to eclipse 50 points against them, the Abilene Ruff Riders (2-9).

Some would call this a rivalry game, but defensive lineman Ray Gates stated, "It's more about the bragging rights." Playing against his best friend Abilene's leading wide receiver Cory White (3 touchdowns for 112-yards in previous meeting), a former Duster in the 2006 season, will meet on the turf to square away business.

Former West Texas A&M player Anthony Clark declared "Every game is a rival game. Everybody wants to knock us off the top just like at WT."

Venom Head Coach Jon Lyles and Ruff Riders Head Coach Rodney Blackshear are no strangers to this rivalry either. Blackshear was Lyles defensive coordinator in Centex and succeeded him after Lyles left for Bossier. Blackshear also knows Venom Defensive Coordinator Quinn Cairo as they were teammates in Grand Rapids.

Blackshear also coached Jared Williams when he was in Lubbock, now a proud member of the Venom. Everybody has connections to the other team and the pressure is there. "Abilene is much better than their recorded and they have added more talent to their already impressive roster," stated Defensive Coordinator Quinn Cairo, "Defensively we will have to do a much better job defending the ‘long ball' and we will have to be better against the run as well."

How does the Venom plan on keeping these bragging rights? "Just play good sound football. Must be focused and have to play our best game of the season," responded Jon Lyles. The pressure is on with teammates playing former teammates and players competing against former coaches, the match-up will be one to see.

The Venom will begin a two-game road trip this Saturday May 29th at 7:05pm CST in Abilene. Fans may catch Saturday's action beginning at 6:55pm CST on 1440 AM ESPN Radio or on B2 Networks.

The AMARILLO VENOM is a proud new member of the Indoor Football League. The team's front office is located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo. 2010 playoff packages are available by calling 806-350-PASS (7277).
