MOBILE, Ala. - The 12th Annual Hank Aaron High School Classic began Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium with a pair of thrilling contests followed by five more tightly-contested games on Saturday. Through seven match-ups in the first two days of the tournament, each game has been decided by three runs or less.
Saturday's slate began with history as Davidson High School junior Matt Arguello tossed the first no-hitter in the history of the Hank Aaron High School Classic in a 3-1 victory over Foley.
"It was a great feeling," Arguello said. "For my last pitch, I really reared back and fired it. It felt great to get that last out."
Satsuma followed that up with a late, 5-4 edging of Cottage Hill that saw 2008 Chris Boyett Silver Slugger Award Winner Jacob Noble get the game-winning single. Thanks to a three-run first inning, last year's Hank Aaron Classic champs, Spanish Fort knocked off Murphy 5-2.
Both of Saturday's evening ballgames were dominated by pitching. In the day's fourth contest, Chad Reeves of Faith Academy out-dueled St. Paul's A.J. McCarron in a 2-1 victory for the Rams. In the day's final contest, Daphne's Connor Reese was just good enough to help his team edge Baldwin County 2-1.
Friday night, Theodore used a five-run third to skate past Mary G. Montgomery 10-8. Matthew Barber was the winning pitcher after tossing five scoreless innings in relief. Also on Friday, Bryant broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning to clip McGill-Toolen 7-5. Second baseman Ricky LaForce put the Hurricanes on top with a lead-off home run in the final frame.
The 12th Annual Hank Aaron High School Classic resumes on Monday with four games. Starting at 11:30 a.m., Gulf Shores will battle Baker. At 2 p.m., Robertsdale takes on Thomasville in the first semifinal, followed by UMS-Wright and Fairhope at 4:30 p.m. The victors of those two games will meet for the tournament title on Monday night at 7 p.m. Monday's semifinals and final will be broadcast on www.baybearsradio.com and on 96.7 FM, "The Bear".
