Amy Scheer Named GM of the Connecticut Whale

DANBURY, CT - The National Women's Hockey League is proud to announce that veteran major league sports executive Amy Scheer has been named the new general manager of the Connecticut Whale. Scheer succeeds Bray Ketchum, who after making a significant impact as a player and GM in the formative years of the NWHL, has left to focus fulltime on a new teaching position.

"Today, we celebrate Bray Ketchum for her skill, dedication and achievements as a great player for the Riveters and as an outstanding GM of the Whale," said NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan Kearney. "We wish Bray well in her new job, and she knows that she will always be regarded as a member of the NWHL family. At the same time, we are overjoyed that Amy Scheer, a woman with vast knowledge, contacts, and accomplishments in our industry, has embraced the opportunity to build the Whale brand and league business with us."

Over the last 25 years, Scheer has had leadership positions with four New York tri-state area teams: New York Liberty of the WNBA, New Jersey Nets of the NBA, and NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. In Scheer's time as VP of Marketing and Communications for the Liberty, the team consistently led the league in attendance, ticket sales, and marketing partnerships. Scheer also delivered groundbreaking events such as the first-ever professional basketball game at Arthur Ashe Stadium and six games at Radio City Music Hall. She helped launch NYCFC to record crowds at Yankee Stadium, and then the New Jersey native made her way back home, representing the Red Bulls as their Chief Commercial Officer.

In 2019, Scheer formed Scheer Insights and Strategy and moved on to a consulting role with the Madison Square Garden Company in marketing, branding, ticket sales, partnerships, event presentation, and events. In addition to her work as general manager of the Whale, Scheer consults for Rugby United New York of Major League Rugby as the team prepares for its third season starting in February 2021.

"What the NWHL has done over the past five years is incredibly inspiring and I am honored to have a role in the ongoing success of the league. It is important that we continue to give women the opportunity to excel in sports at the highest level while showing young girls that anything is possible. I look forward to working closely with the Connecticut community. With the Whale players, coaches and staff, we will put on a great show and make our fans proud."

Ketchum was a top forward with the Riveters in the first three seasons of the NWHL, winning the Isobel Cup with the team in 2018. A former player at Yale, she became general manager of the Whale in April 2019, and the team advanced to the Isobel Cup semifinals. This offseason, Ketchum signed five of the six players selected by the team in the 2020 NWHL Draft, and built a strong roster that includes talented newcomers such as Melissa Samoskevich and Abbie Ives and several key returning players.

"I really enjoyed being the GM of this incredible team and I want to thank the Whale players and staff for their hard work, the fans for their support, and the NWHL for continuing to build women's pro hockey," said Ketchum. "I know that Amy will be a great addition to the Whale, and I look forward to watching the team's success this season."
