
Amsterdam Mohawks Sign Two Wake Forest Pitchers for 2014

The 2012 and 2013 PGCBL champion Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of two pitchers for the 2014 season. John McCarren and Connor Johnstone, both freshmen at Wake Forest University, have agreed to join the Mohawks this coming summer. In 2014, the Mohawks will be seeking their third straight league championship and fifth in the last six years.
Johnstone, a Roswell, GA native was considered one of the top high school pitchers in the state of Georgia during his senior year. The 6'2 180 lb right hander features an 89-91 mph fastball with a plus breaking ball and a cutter.
McCarren, a Manasquan, NJ native had a great fall for the Demon Deacons and is expected to contribute immediately for them. Th 6'3 190 lb right hander has a college-ready slider and throws his fastball 87-89 mph.
Wake Forest Head Coach Tom Walter on Johnstone: "Connor possesses above average command of three pitches. Right now he is 88-90 and has plus pitchability. He will step right in and pitch in our top six immediately. As he matures physically, his velocity will increase as will his potential to be a Friday-night starter."
Walter on McCarren: "John is a lanky right-handed pitcher with a great feel for pitching and a tremendous upside. Right now he is in the upper 80s with plus secondary stuff. We believe that John is the steal of the class and look forward to his arrival on campus."
