Bellingham Slam News Release

MONTEBELLO, Calif. - The Bellingham Slam's Tyler Amaya assumed the role of player-coach and scored 39 points to lead the Slam to a 150-109 win over the Venice Beach Warriors in an IBL-WCBL interleague game in Los Angeles on Friday.

The road-weary Slam, which arrived in Southern California Friday morning, struggled early and trailed 28-27 after one quarter.

But the Slam, led by Amaya, turned things around in the second quarter, outscoring Venice Beach 50-28 for a 77-56 halftime lead.

Bellingham continued to pour it on in the second half, using a 10-0 run in the middle stages of the third quarter to lead 107-79.

Amaya's game-high 39 points came on 12-of-15 shooting from the floor and a 7-for-10 mark from three-point range. Guard Morris Anderson, coming off an IBL Player of the Week nod, scored 22 on an efficient 9-of-10 shooting mark.

Center Leon Gibson led Venice Beach with a double-double of 31 points and 11 rebounds.

The Slam continue their Southern California road trip with a game against the L.A. Summer Pro League All-Stars on Saturday. The Slam return to Bellingham for a home game on Friday, June 6. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
