Amarillo Venom News Release
The Amarillo Dusters announced today that Offensive Specialist Chavis McCollister has signed a contract with the Dallas Desparados in the AFL.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Chavis," said Dusters General Manager Warren McCarty. "Chavis gets the chance to play for Coach Will McClay, he'll have one of the all-time great AFL quarterbacks in Clint Dolezel throwing to him, and he's playing for one of the top organizations in the AFL, owned and operated by the Dallas Cowboys. That's something special."
McCollister proved to be a dominant player in af2 in 2005. He had 124 catches for 1,866 yards (led af2) and 36 touchdowns. He also had 5 carries for 48 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.
"Chavis McCollister is one of the few players from af2 that we really went after," said Desparados Head Coach Will McClay. "He's an explosive player, and he makes things happen with the ball in his hands. We've got him slated to be an Offensive Specialist and possibly a Wide Receiver/Linebacker. We're just really excited about his potential to make big plays. Our quarterback Clint Dolezel likes what he's seen from Chavis, so it should be a good fit."
After setting high school records as a quarterback at 1A Tenaha HS, McCollister played runningback at Division II Tarleton State in Stephenville, TX. He started at TSU in 2002 and 2003, and also played on the Texans basketball team as well.
"Chavis is a freak athlete," said Dusters Head Coach Steve Perdue. "He can shake you, he can bull over you, he can go up and get the ball, and he can get low to the ground when he needs to. He has great hands, he runs good routes, and he's very strong. He's done some unbelievable things on the field. I expect him to go to camp ready to make a name for himself in the AFL. We really want to develop a strong relationship with the Dallas Desparados and the Cowboys organization, and this is a good first step."
