Orange County Breakers News Release

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. - The Orange County Breakers have added another strong piece to what they hope is a roster that will contend for the Mylan World TeamTennis title in 2016.  Alla Kudryavtseva, who recently knocked off the world no. 1 doubles team of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza at the BNP Paribas Open, will suit up for the Breakers this summer.

"I am absolutely ecstatic about playing for the Orange County Breakers and returning to Mylan WTT this season," said Kudryavtseva. "Last year (while playing for the Austin Aces) we came close to breaking the Washington Kastles dominance in this league and this year we are aiming to go one step further in Orange County. While I hope our fans in Austin will continue to support us at our new home in California, I look forward to 'making waves' on the court and meeting tennis fans in Newport Beach this summer."

Kudryavtseva, who qualified for the WTA Finals in doubles in 2014, has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open in doubles. The Moscow native has a career high doubles ranking of No. 15 and currently sits at No. 26 in the world.  Kudryavtseva and her tour doubles partner Vania King are currently in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Aside for her impressive achievements on the WTA Tour, Kudryavtseva saw similar success in her first season of Mylan WTT action last summer.  The Russian, who was named 2015 Mylan WTT Female Rookie of the Year, led her team to a Western Conference title and league Finals appearance last season.

"Alla (Kudryavtseva) was without a doubt one of the most effective players in Mylan WTT last season," said Breakers General Manager Allen Hardison. "The energy that Alla brings is contagious and she is a fan favorite in this league because of it.  Her passion, knowledge and skill for this sport are second to none and we are thrilled to have her on the Breakers."

The Breakers were able to sign Kudryavtseva before the upcoming Mylan WTT Draft due to the league's player protection rule.  The rule allows teams to protect players who played for the same franchise in the previous season.  Since Kudryavtseva played for the Breakers franchise last year when the team was based in Texas, it gave the Breakers the option to protect her before the draft. The Breakers also exercised this rule last week with the protection of Nicole Gibbs, who is currently in the round of 16 of the singles draw at the BNP Paribas Open.

Kudryavtseva joins Gibbs and head coach Rick Leach, who are both Southern California residents, on the Breakers roster.  The team will put together the final pieces of their roster during the 41st edition of the Mylan WTT Draft, which will take place March 25 in Miami.  Orange County will need to draft a minimum of two more players for the upcoming season to complete their roster.  The Breakers still have their first round Marquee Draft pick available as well as a third and fourth round selection in the Roster Draft.
