All-Star Game Update

July 21, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

Chris Shaw (Boston College) got to partake in the 2013 Home Run Derby for the New Bedford Bay Sox. New Bedford's starting catcher, Chris Travers (Roger Williams University), pitched to Shaw but the duo couldn't get much going. Shaw was unable to leave the yard but came close a number of times.

Shaw's college battering mate and Sanford Mainer, Nate LaPointe (Boston College), won the Derby with a total of 11 home runs. LaPointe hit a total of ten home runs in his first two rounds and only needed one homer to beat Holyoke's Vahn Bozian (USC) in the final round.

All-Star Game

The East All-Stars beat the West All-Stars 2-1 in late innings Sunday night at Robbie Mills Field in the 2013 NECBL All Star Game.

Laconia's own Joe Torres (Ionia) was awarded the 2013 All-Star MVP. Torres was 1-for-1 and scored the winning run.

The game was tied 1-1 until the bottom of the 8th. With two outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mystic Schooners Travis Boyd (Seton Hall) hit a single to right field. The West's right fielder, Holyoke's Vahn Bozoian (USC), threw the ball to the backstop allowing Torres to score the winning run.

The New Bedford Bay Sox had four players make appearances for the East.

Chris Travers (Roger Williams University) started at catcher for the East All-Stars. Travers went 1-for-1 with a single and caught three innings. Travers ended his night by catching Bay Sox starting pitcher Johnny Lieske (Heartland CC).

Lieske worked a near flawless third inning allowing one hit to the four batters he faced. Lieske induced two groundouts to second base and a groundout to shortstop.

Chris Shaw (Boston College) pinched-hit for the East in the bottom of the 5th. Shaw gave the ball a ride to left field but it was just caught in front of the Laconia green monster. That was Shaw's only at-bat of the night.

In the top of the sixth, the East made defensive substitutions at every position except catcher. Carl Anderson (Bryant) was one of the replacements in left field. Anderson went 0-for-1 and was hit by a pitch in the top of the 8th.

The NECBL divisions changed from the North and South to the West and East in 2009. Since the divisional change, the East leads the All-Star series 3-2.
