Alaska Dream Names New Head Coach: Al Sokaitis

July 13, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release


Anchorage, AL. The new expansion ABA Alaska Dream professional basketball team scheduled to begin play in December today named it's new Head Coach, Al Sokaitis. "We are so excited to have Al with us," stated team owner Trey Davis. "He is a former University of Alaska Fairbanks coach and has a tremendous background with a great winning record. We will build a team that Alaska can be proud of."

Coach Sokaitis produced one of the nation's best records for turning programs with a history of losing into champions. During his 31 year career, he has coached in 8 programs and led teams to a basketball first in first 7 institutions including setting records in all 7. He took 3 different colleges to the NCAA's and was recognized 12 times at "Coach of the Year." He has also been recognized by the Alaskan State Legislature for contributions to the State outside of basketball and served as Chair of United Way.

Currently Coach Sokaitis is Co-Director of the Challenge Life Youth Foundation, an effort that focuses on bringing programs of mental and physical wellness to communities throughout Alaska with a concentration on the Arctic Region. Over the past four years, "Challenge Life" has developed numerous programs to combat drug and alcohol abuse and help in suicide prevention. The program has provided underprivileged communities with numerous highly successful academic programs, community health events and scholarships for continuing education. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Special Olympics in Alaska.
