Versatile playmaking guard A.J. Mosby of the Sudbury Five, whose reliable play propelled his team to the league's second-best record, has been named NBL Canada Newcomer of the Year, league officials announced today.

"A.J. came into the season focused on proving to this league that he can play at this level - and he has done that and more," said Logan Stutz, Sudbury general manager and head coach. "On and off the court, he has been fantastic for Sudbury. He has been a pleasure to coach all year."

In 2023, Mosby Jr. stood out immediately - scoring 25 or more points in 10 games, including a season-high 35 points against the Windsor Express on March 17. His 620 points was good for second in the league. Appearing in 31 games, the 6-foot-3 guard finished the year averaging 20 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

He was named NBL Canada Player of the Week twice this season, Feb. 19 and March 19.

"A.J. was one of the league's most consistent competitors all season long, a player whose day-in-day-out quality of play put him in the conversation for MVP," said Audley Stephenson, NBLC Commissioner VP. "There were countless times this season where A.J. put the team on his back and inspired an important run or comeback. His poise, his knack for finding the rim makes him a top choice for this award."

Mosby Jr. played college basketball for Alcorn State University in Mississippi before playing professionally overseas in the Republic of Georgia. The Cartersville, Ga., native then branched out to play in the NBA G League with the North Arizona Sun Kings and the Erie Bay Hawks.

Last season, Mosby Jr., 27, played for the Albany Patroons of The Basketball League (TBL) where he posted 37 points in a game against the London Lightning.

Stephenson continued, "We already knew A.J. was a great player from our league squaring off against his as part of the NBL Canada-TBL partnership. That great play continued on our courts this season."

Mosby is the fourth straight member of The Five to win the award, following Jaylen Bland in 2018-19, J.R. Holder in 2019-20, and Jeremy Harris in 2022. Previous winners of the NBL Canada Newcomer of the Year Award include:
