AIFL Week Three Preview
Published on March 8, 2006 under American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) News Release
RALEIGH, N.C. - One team has won both its games by 30 points and the other has squeaked by a combined total of three points. So what does that mean when the Raleigh Rebels host the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers Thursday in a meeting of 2-0 teams? Not much, according to Rebels coach Steven G. Folmar.
"You can go out and win by 30 one night and lose by three the next,'' Folmar said. "We have to go into this one thinking we're 0-2."
The Rebels have been a surprise so far in the young 2006 AIFL season, beating Carolina and Daytona Beach by an average of 32 points. The combination of David Malino and Lavell Bailey has hooked up six times this season while Montrail Pitman paces the Rebel defense with five interceptions.
"We've had some success, and big games like this come on you fast,'' Folmar said. "This is going to be a great game.
The Vipers, paced by wide receiver Garvin Graves (20 catches, 290 yards, 4 touchdowns) are making their first road trip of the season after beating Daytona Beach by two points and Rome by one on the game's final play. Head coach Jason Gibson coached the Rebels last season, but the 2005 Rebels were a traveling team, so there goes the homecoming angle.
"It's a big game, but every game is a big game in this league," Gibson said. Week three marks the debut of the Huntington Heroes as they host the Miami Valley Silverbacks Saturday night. The Augusta Spartans (1-0) make their home debut Friday against the Florence Phantoms after posting a 33-24 road decision against the Carolina Ghostriders.
Other games this week include the Rome Renegades (1-1) at the Carolina Ghostriders (0-2) on Friday, the Daytona Beach Thunder (0-2) at the Richmond Bandits (1-1) and the Reading Express (0-1) traveling to meet the Steubenville Stampede (0-2) on Sunday, and the Monday night game pitting the Syracuse Soldiers (0-1)and the Johnstown Riverhawks (1-0).
