SILVERBACKS 73, STAMPEDE 28

TROY, Ohio -- Kerrick Cooper threw for 178 yards and four touchdowns in a 73-28 win over the Steubenville Stampede. Maurice Lee caught three of those touchdown passes and returned a 49 yard kickoff for his fourth. Neal Wood rushed for three touchdowns.

Defensively, the Silverbacks were at the top of their game. Joe Washington blocked a field goal attempt and recovered a fumble in the Stampede's end zone. B.J. Paulus also got his hands on a Steubenville fumble.

The Silverbacks started two of their newest acquisitions on the line last night. Pat Wilis and Luke Scarborough added both size and strength to the Silverbacks line and helped the team to a season 2-0 sweep of the Stampede.

RIVERHAWKS 57, FREEZE 38

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - From start to finish of Saturday night's game at Cambria County War Memorial, the Johnstown Riverhawks kept the heat on first-place Erie - dropping the Freeze in a key AIFL North battle for the Riverhawks (5-4).

The win, coupled with Canton's bye week, moves Johnstown into a fourth-place tie with the Legends. Johnstown opened the scoring on an 18-yard field goal from Jason Cherry with 4:16 expired in the first. Johnstown added a point to its lead on the ensuing kickoff when Erie's Jon Frazier failed to return the ball out of the end zone.

Quarterback Adam Haught then connected with receivers Marko Thomas and Richard Cooper for touchdowns as Johnstown took an 18-0 lead into the second. Haught scored Johnstown's next touchdown by using his legs on a 19-yard scrambling romp to the end zone.

Erie's David Dinkins scored on short rushing touchdowns before and after Haught's run to pull Erie within 11 points at 25-14. Riverhawks receiver Quenteen Robinson bumped the Johnstown back to 18 points with the first of his three touchdown grabs - from 26 yards away - to give the Riverhawks a 32-14 lead. Erie's Darmel Whitfield pulled in a 33-yard pass to keep the Freeze afloat at halftime. Whitfield followed with a 39-yard scoring grab on Erie's first drive of the second half, pulling his squad within six points. It was the closest Erie would get. Kickoff returner Carlos Campbell took the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to pay dirt to return Johnstown's lead to double digits at 38-26. Cherry rattled home a 19-yard field goal to expand the lead late in the third. Cherry's third field goal - a 23-yarder - gave the River hawks a 44-26 advantage early in the fourth.

The Freeze could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way with Robinson answering two Erie scores with touchdowns of his own. Robinson pulled in an 8-yard pass after a Chris Blackshear touchdown and a 33-yarder after Frazier hauled in a score. Both of Erie's touchdowns covered 20 yards. Haught ended with 244 yards passing on 17 completions with no interceptions in his 29 attempts.

Robinson led all receivers in catches and yardage with seven grabs for 105 yards. Erie was paced by Whitfield's 98 yards on five catches. Dinkins was 12 of 28 for 175 yards and was sacked three times.

THUNDER 49, SPARTANS 44

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Calvin Thomas rushed for 81 yards and four touchdowns in his first appearance of the season as the Daytona Beach Thunder defeated the Augusta Spartans 49-44 in an American Indoor Football League game Saturday before 3,776 at PBS 15 Field in the Ocean Center.

The Thunder (5-4) erased deficits of 13-0 and 19-7, taking a 28-26 lead on Thomas' 14-yarder with 13:35 remaining in the third quarter. Daytona Beach forced four Augusta (2-6) turnovers as it built its lead to 49-32 on Oscar Davenport's 13-yarder to Robert Bailey with 12:45 to play.

Augusta closed to 49-44 on Morris Drakeford's 14-yarder from Anthony Young with five seconds to play, but the Thunder recovered the onside kick to preserve the victory.

Oscar Davenport threw for three touchdowns, two to Robert Bailey and one to Kwasie Kwaku.

For Augusta, Stone threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns. Drakefore had seven catches for 83 yards, and Young caught five passes for 84 yards and two scores before moving to quarterback after Stone's injury.

RENEGADES 63, PHANTOMS 19

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Marcus Brady threw for five touchdown passes and defensive back Jermaine Collins had two interceptions as Rome romped over Florence Saturday night.

Rome (8-1) took over the league's best record with the victory.

Gerald Gales caught three touchdown passes and ran for another, Andrew Amerson caught a pair of TDs and Lemar Parrish had one.

Bo Bartik threw for two touchdowns in relief.

Collins' two picks gives him 14 for the season.

HEROES 50, SOLDIERS 29

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fred Ray tossed five touchdown passes as Huntington remained unbeaten on the road with a win over Syracuse.

Ray hooked up twice each with Brad Bates and James Hawkins and once with leading receiver Shane Holsinger to bounce back from last Saturday's 5-interception night in a 54-39 loss to Reading at home.

James Branch and Larry Davis each had an interception for the Heroes.

Huntington had two weeks to prepare since the April 22 game at Steubenville was postponed due to a scheduling mixup.

On the first play of the game, Ray connected with Bates for a 30-yard TD pass. In the fourth period, the two hooked up for a 35-yard TD strike on the first play after a Syracuse TD. On the play, Bates appeared to injure his right wrist and he didn't return.

After the Davis interception, the Heroes needed just a play to go the distance as Ray found Holsinger on a 45-yard bomb. Ray now has 26 TD passes

On the ground, the Heroes got two scores from Donte' Newsome.

BANDITS 49. REBELS 40

RALEIGH, N.C. - Redd Thompson and Robbie Jenkins connected on a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Richmond Bandits pulled away to a 49-40 victory over the Raleigh Rebels in a key Southern Conference match-up Thursday night.

Raleigh (6-3) used a 13-0 third quarter to take a 34-28 lead, but the Bandits (7-2) used Bryan Still's 13-yarder from Jenkins, the Thompson scores of 23 and 37 yards and forcing two Rebel turnovers to regain control and a post a season sweep.

Jenkins overcame three interceptions to finish with 230 yards and five touchdowns. Thompson had seven catches for 151 yards and three touchdowns, and Still six grabs for 66 yards and two scores. Shannon Davis had a 54-yard missed field goal for the game's first score while Chris Segaar nailed all seven PATs, which came into the play the fourth quarter. .

David Malino finished with 290 yards and five touchdowns for the Rebels, with three going to Lavel Bailey (seven catches for 152 yards) and two to Sammy Henderson (five for 82).
