Chattahoochee Valley Vipers News Release
Columbus, Ga. - At a press conference held today at 11:00 a.m. at the Civic Center, AIFL Columbus team owner Brian Schwelling stated that, "after a 60 day âName the Team' contest the Atlantic Indoor Football League's Columbus franchise is pleased to announce Barry Lyon of Hamilton, Ga. winner for his submission of âChattahoochee Valley Vipers." "We are very pleased with the name," said Schwelling, "but is was the fans who chose it. We received over 1100 submissions, over 400 chose the Vipers, and Mr. Lyon's submission was made first."
Lyon will receive two season tickets for life and will have the opportunity to serve as 2005-2006 president of the Valley Viper's fan club. The team's website, www.thevalleyvipers.com, is still under construction, but there will be no better place to get news, information, merchandise or stats than the Viper's website.
The Valley Vipers have named former Bossier City Battle Wings (AF2) defensive coordinator, Richard Britt as Head Coach and General Manager. "I am very happy to be here in Columbus. This area has produced some of the best football talent in history. This is the heart of the SEC and we have the opportunity to capture quite a bit of talent. I look forward to bringing not only a winning team to the Chattahoochee Valley, but a winning tradition in the AIFL."
Britt's resume in professional football is highlighted with many defensive superlatives. After playing two years in the Intense Football League and 11/2 seasons in the AFL, Richard Britt decided to pursue a career in indoor/arena coaching.
While with the Bakersfield Blitz in 2003-2004, his defensive unit was ranked 2nd in the National Conference of the AF2 and 3rd in the AF2 (League) and was the league leader in sacks with 30. While with the Tulsa Talons of the Arena Football2 league, his defense was ranked #1 against the rush, 3rd in turn-over margin, 5th in sacks, 8th in total defense.
"Defense is crucial in this league," said Schwelling, "you've got to be able to make some stops if you are going to win football games and Coach Britt has the experience and success we need to do that." Coach Britt has also served as Vice President of Football Operations for Roanoke Pro Football, Inc. Coach Britt lives in Carrolton, TX.
