September 11, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today its composite 2006 preseason schedule, set to begin next week. The schedule comprises 41 games, to be played between Thurs., Sept. 21 and Mon., Oct. 2.
The preseason kicks off next Thursday when the Philadelphia Phantoms battle the first-year Lowell Devils at the Virtua Health Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J. The Worcester Sharks, the AHL's other new entry for 2006-07, hit the ice for the first time on Sept. 28 when they visit the Hartford Wolf Pack in Simsbury, Conn. Twenty-five of the 41 games on the AHL's preseason schedule are set to be played at local community and neutral-site rinks.
The defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears have a four-game preseason slate, taking on East Division foes Philadelphia, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Norfolk.
The preseason will also feature five National Hockey League games played in AHL arenas. That schedule begins on Sept. 17, when the Tsongas Arena in Lowell hosts the New Jersey Devils and the Boston Bruins, and the MTS Centre in Winnipeg sees the Phoenix Coyotes battle the Edmonton Oilers. Hamilton's Copps Coliseum (Sept. 23, Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh), Hershey's Giant Center (Sept. 24, New Jersey vs. Washington) and Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard (Sept. 30, New Jersey vs. N.Y. Islanders) will also host NHL preseason action.
The American Hockey League's 71st regular season begins on Wed., Oct. 4, as 27 teams begin competition for the prestigious Calder Cup.
