AFL Week 14 Power Rankings Announced
June 4, 2012 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
CHICAGO - The Arizona Rattlers (9-3) hold the top spot in the AFL Power Rankings for the third consecutive week, following a 55-45 home victory over the Pittsburgh Power (2-9).
Currently riding a four-game winning streak, the Rattlers host J.J. Raterink and the Iowa Barnstormers (5-7) fresh off an impressive 70-62 win over the Cleveland Gladiators (6-5) on NFL Network's "NET10 Arena Football Friday" in Week 13. The matchup will showcase two of the League's most dynamic passing connections, as Raterink and receiver Jesse Schmidt will try to match Arizona's combo of quarterback Nick Davila and receiver Maurice Purify.
A bye in Week 13 did not hurt the San Antonio Talons (8-3), who moved back up to the number two spot following a loss by the San Jose SaberCats (8-4). The Talons will look to get familiar with the site of ArenaBowl XXV, as they visit the tenth-ranked New Orleans VooDoo (5-6) in Week 14. Kurt Rocco and company are coming off an important 57-35 divisional win over the Georgia Force (6-6). The Talons defeated the VooDoo 62-48 earlier this year.
The Philadelphia Soul (9-3) moved up one spot following a 79-48 win over the Orlando Predators (1-10). The win gave Philadelphia a firm grasp on the top seed in the American Conference playoff race, though the team must square off with the Milwaukee Mustangs (4-7), who are coming off an upset win at home over the San Jose SaberCats. The Mustangs defeated the Soul in Philadelphia 64-63 earlier this year.
The San Jose SaberCats dropped two spots to number four in the AFL Power Rankings after losing 68-81 at Milwaukee in Week 13. Despite the loss, quarterback Mark Grieb had his best outing of the season, completing 35 passes for 435 yards and a career and franchise-high 10 touchdowns. The team hosts Chris Leak and the Orlando Predators in Week 14.
Finishing off the top five are the Chicago Rush (7-4) who improved to 6-0 at home in 2012 following a 73-62 victory over the then-fifth-ranked Spokane Shock (6-5). Quarterback Russ Michna had a career day, setting new single-game franchise records with 32 completions for 412 yards and nine touchdowns. The Rush travel to Salt Lake City in Week 14 to face the sixth-ranked Utah Blaze (7-4). The Shock fell to eighth in the AFL Power Rankings following the loss.
