AFL Great McEntyre Playing in Final Regular Season Game Saturday
July 18, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Orlando Predators News Release
ORLANDO - One of the greatest defensive players to ever suit up in the Arena Football League will play his final regular season game this Saturday when the Orlando Predators host the New Orleans VooDoo at the new Amway Center at 7:30 p.m.
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has announced he will retire following the 19th postseason run in a row by the Predators. The organization will induct the AFL's all-time interception leader into its ring of honor at the start of the 2012 season.
"Kenny has been the face of this franchise for more than a decade and we've valued his contributions, not only with the Predators, but with the Arena Football League as a whole," Predators Managing Partner Brett Bouchy said.
After intercepting two passes over the weekend at Tulsa, McEntyre improved his career regular season interception mark to 95 over the course of 13 AFL seasons, 12 of which have been spent in Orlando.
"Not too many people can say they started and finished their careers with the same team," McEntyre said. "It's been an honor. I'm appreciative and thankful to the Preds' organization for all they've done to take care of me and my family over the years."
McEntyre was a part of two championship teams in Orlando (1998, 2000) during the early part of his career. He has played in four ArenaBowl games and is looking to make one final run towards a title alongside former teammate and current head coach Pat O'Hara.
"Kenny is a true Predator in every sense of the word. His passion for the game and interception record stands alone," O'Hara said. "I'm blessed to have been his teammate while winning two ArenaBowl Championships together. He will go down in history as the greatest defensive back to ever play the game."
After joining the Predators late in the 1998 season, the Dallas, TX native and Kansas State alum became a fan-favorite and fixture in the Orlando community over the years.
"It won't really hit me until I'm in the arena next year and not playing in The Jungle in front of our fans," McEntyre said.
The Predators will learn its first-round opponent following Saturday's game, as they'll either be on the road at Jacksonville or Cleveland to begin the postseason.
