July 13, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

SIEGFRIED TURNS 51: Spokane Head Coach CHRIS SIEGFRIED has led the Shock to the league's best record (11-2) and a spot in the 2006 playoffs in the team's first season of af2 play. In the process, he has steadily climbed up the career coaching victories ladder. He's now tied for second overall with 51 wins. He's one of just three coaches in af2 history to hit the 50-win plateau. Siegfried needs just one more win to tie and two more wins to surpass former Rio Grande Valley and Tennessee Valley Head Coach KEVIN GUY as the af2 career leader in overall coaching victories. Guy is currently No. 1 in all-time wins with 52 (52-19). Below is a list of the top coaches in league history.

REESE SET TO JOIN 500-YD RUSHING CLUB: South Georgia QB JULIAN REESE is poised to hit the 500-yard rushing plateau in just his second season in the af2. After rushing for 57 yards in a 51-22 win against Bossier-Shreveport in Week 15, Reese currently has 484 career rushing yards and needs just 16 yards in the team's final three games to hit the mark. Currently Memphis QB BRIAN JONES and Albany QB RYAN VENA are the only two active members of the 500-career rushing yards club.

QUAD CITY'S TRIO SETS MARK: Quad City receivers KRIS PETERS, TIM DODGE, and JACK WALKER became just the third threesome of receivers on the same team to each record 1,000 receiving yards in a season. Peters leads the group with 1,306 yards, Dodge has 1,168 and Walker is third at 1,089. In 2004, Peters was also part of the second group to hit the milestone as a member of the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. That season he led the Yard Dawgz with 1,304 receiving yards. AL HUNT and TIMON MARSHALL also recorded over 1,000 yards for Oklahoma City that season. The first group to do it had a familiar face as well. In 2003, the Steamwheelers 1,000-yard trio consisted of Tim Dodge, JEFF HEWITT and IRA GOOCH.

Peters, Dodge and Walker are also on pace to become the first trio of receivers to record 100 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Walker leads the group with 98 catches, Dodge has 94 and Peters has 87.

WHEELERS GIVE BACK: Following the Quad City Steamwheelers' game last Saturday night against Tennessee Valley, the team raised $5,175 for the Trinity Health Foundation with a special postgame jersey auction. The jerseys that were auctioned off were special jerseys designed with an independence theme. Five jerseys went for a total of $300 or more with FB/LB KIKA KAULALAAU and OL/DL SHONN BELL leading the pack raising $575 and $500, respectively, for their jerseys. WR/DB TIM DODGE saw his jersey go for $425, the third highest amount raised on the evening.

WIN AND THEY'RE IN: This week Memphis and Arkansas have a chance to join Florida and Spokane as official entries in the 2006 af2 playoffs. The Xplorers can clinch their spot with a win against Amarillo. The Twisters can clinch with a win against Oklahoma City. Memphis can clinch a home playoff game with a win and a loss by Green Bay and Birmingham.

BENTON HITS 800 MARK - HOLDS af2 CAREER SCORING LEAD: Florida OS MAGIC BENTON jumped ahead of Arkansas WR/DB KEVIN WILLIAMS to become the af2's all-time scoring leader in Week 14 thanks to his two touchdowns against the Green Bay Blizzard. With another 12-point performance in Week 15, the veteran increased his all-time total to 808 career points. Benton now has the distinction of being the first af2 player to hit the 800-point plateau. Williams currently ranks second in scoring with 790 points. Former Tulsa star MITCH ALLNER entered 2006 as the league's career leader with 780 points over his five-year career. Memphis' KEVIN PRENTISS became the newest member of the 700-club with an 18-point effort on three touchdowns in a Week 15 loss at Louisville. Prentiss currently ranks fifth on the all-time list with 714 points.

MCCOLLISTER MAKIN' KNIGHTS BETTER: One of Macon's newest additions, OS CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER, has been a huge factor for the Knights since his arrival four weeks ago. Acquired in a trade with Oklahoma City, the second-year player has accounted for 12 scores (11 receiving, 1 rushing) in four games. Not coincidentally, Macon has won three of those four contests, including a 51-48 win in Week 15 on the road against Albany. McCollister has accumulated 37 catches (9.3 per game) for 534 yards (133.5 per game) as the Knights feature receiver.

ROOKIES, VETERANS TAKE AIM AT TD RECORD: Rookie QB SCOTT RISLOV of Central Valley owns the af2 overall lead in touchdown passes with 85 through 13 games. At his current rate, he's on pace to finish with 105 touchdown passes. Other af2 signal callers also on pace to hit the century mark are veterans CRAIG STRICKLAND of Oklahoma City (82), CHRIS WALLACE of Florida (82) and Louisville rookie BRETT DIETZ (81). All four are on their way to surpass MATT SAUK's current league record of 99 in a season. The best single season total in Arena Football (AFL and af2) history is CLINT DOLEZEL's 105 touchdown tosses for the Dallas Desperados in 2006.

MAGER PLAYER: Louisville OS ROB MAGER has established himself as the most dangerous receiver in the af2 this season. He currently leads the league in scoring (276 points), receiving yards (1,640), receiving touchdowns (46) and receptions (123). He has already surpassed his own team records for a single season in all of those same categories with the exception of receptions (125). If he continues at his current pace, Mager also has a shot at a number of league records in 2006. The following is a breakdown of where Mager stands.

Manchester OS STEVE GONZALEZ is also on near league-record pace for scoring and total touchdowns. The second-year standout from Menlo currently ranks right behind Mager in both categories with 270 points and 44 total touchdowns. Gonzalex is on pace for 332 points and 54 total touchdowns.

HICKS AND VENA SETTING PASSING YARDS PACE: Veteran quarterbacks RYAN VENA (Albany) and TIM HICKS (Quad City) are both on pace to break MATT SAUK's league record for most passing yards in one season. Sauk set the all-time mark of 4,489 yards last season with the Louisville Fire. The following is a breakdown of where Vena and Hicks stand.

One team (Oklahoma City) has two receivers with over 1,000 yards. The current leader in receiving yards is Louisville's ROB MAGER with 1,640. PRENTISS APPROACHING ALL-TIME KICK RETURN YARDS MARK: Memphis OS/KR KEVIN PRENTISS is among the league's all-time best in a number of different categories, one of which is all-time kick return yards. Prentiss has accumulated 456 yards this season to run his career total to 3,517. He needs just 55 more yards to surpass SHADRICK MCAFEE'S current all-time record of 3,572 yards. Another active af2 player high on the same list is Arkansas' LENNIE JOHNSON who has 3,051 yards career kick return yards.

MOTEN RE-SIGNS WITH SOUL: Former Rio Grande Valley DS EDDIE MOTEN has re-signed with the AFL's Philadelphia Soul for the 2007 season. Moten (5'10", 185, Texas A&M Kingsville) finished the regular season tying a League record with 13 interceptions (Clevan Thomas, 2001) and tallied 104 total tackles, 18 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Three of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns and he is now one of only six players in League history to record more than 100 tackles in a season. He also led the League in passes defended with 31 (13 interceptions, 18 breakups). Moten was recognized as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game six times and received League honors as Defensive Player of the Week once. He was also honored by the League following the season as an All-Arena first team selection and was a finalist for the ADT Defensive Player of the Year award. Moten is the fourth former af2 standout to re-sign with the Soul for 2007, joining teammates WR/DB MIKE BROWN, WR/LB J.J. MCKELVEY and FB/LB DARNELL SMALL.

IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY - af2 PLAYOFF PICTURE: Six teams from each the American and National Conference qualify for the playoffs. The six qualifying teams in each conference consist of the two division champions and four Wild Cards, determined by best overall record. Seeding in each conference is based on overall record, with the top two seeds in each conference reserved for the division champions, regardless of record. In the First Round (August 4-6), the two division winners in each conference receive a bye. The top-seeded Wild Card team hosts the lowest-seeded Wild Card team, while the No. 2 seeded Wild Card team hosts the No. 3 seeded Wild Card team. In the Second Round (August 11-13), the division winners who had byes in the First Round host the winners from the First Round. The top seeded division champion plays the lowest seeded team advancing from the First Round, while the second-seeded division winner plays the other winner from the First Round. The winners of the Second Round will meet for the Conference Championships on the weekend of August 18-20. For this round seeding no longer matters, meaning the team with the better overall record hosts the Conference Championship. The winners of the Conference Championships face off in the 2006 ArenaCup on August 26 or 27 at a site to be announced.
