June 29, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
MEMPHIS XPLORERS (9-3) AT MACON KNIGHTS (4-7) FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 2006 - Macon Coliseum (7,182) 7:30 P.M. ET The Memphis Xplorers roll into Macon Coliseum after avenging an early season loss to South Georgia Wildcats. A 26-7 run to close out the first half broke the game wide open for the Xplorers, who eventually cruised to an 81-53 win. Leading the Memphis attack was QB BRIAN JONES, who completed 22-of-23 passes for 281 yards. Jones had eight passing touchdowns and added a score one on the ground. His performance earned him the Schutt Offensive Player of the Week Award. WR/DB DEON GIDDENS caught four passes for 25 yards and two touchdowns, but his best play was the blocked field goal he returned 57 yards for a score at the end of the first half. OS KEVIN PRENTISS turned in his finest performance on the season with nine receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff 58 yards for a score in the second half. WR/DB GREG GOLDEN added two touchdown receptions as well. WR/LB KENNY HIGGINS leads the team in receiving on the season and is currently 5th in the af2 in receiving yards with 1,179. Despite allowing 53 points, the Memphis defensive secondary put on quite a show with 15 pass break ups. Memphis' offense is ranked #3 in scoring at 57.8 points per game, while the defense is ranked #1 at 40.6 ppg. The Macon Knights are coming out of a bye week geared up to play after their loss to Florida two weeks ago. In the defeat, QB CHAD ELLIOTT threw for 291 yards and a season-high six touchdowns. WR/DB CHAVIS MCCOLLISTER had 14 receptions for 197 yards and three scores. McCollister has totaled 23 receptions for 333 yards and five scores in two games since coming over from Oklahoma City in a trade. Macon is last in the league in the red zone with a conversion rate of 57.4 percent. Elliott has been a bit erratic at times in 2006, as evidenced by his 15 interceptions. If he plays well, the Knights usually follow his lead. JAMES HICKENBOTHAM leads the team with 85 catches for 1,002 yards and 20 total touchdowns (19 receiving, 1 rushing). The last meeting between these two teams fell heavily in favor of the Xplorers, who controlled the game from start to finish. Injured WR/DB TERRELL ADAMS led all receivers with eight catches for 123 yards and a score, and also led all defenders with 7.5 tackles. Higgins caught six for 108 and two scores. Giddens tallied 3.5 tackles, one forced fumble, one interception and three pass break ups in the win. Macon needs to start a winning streak this week for the team to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Memphis is seeking to stay in the mix with Florida for the South Division crown and potential top seed in the American Conference.
