af2 Names Players of Week

April 9, 2002 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO – Augusta Stallions' quarterback GLEN GAUNT is the Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week in arenafootball2, the league office announced today.

Gaunt (pronounced "Gant") accounted for almost 50 points in the Stallions' 53-44 victory at Jacksonville Saturday. The University of South Florida product passed for 308 yards and six touchdowns, rushing for two more TDs in the season-opening win.

Greensboro defensive specialist DEE JEFFERSON is the ADT Defensive Player of the Week. Jefferson's 47-yard interception return for touchdown with 41 seconds left killed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's last minute bid to tie the game and secured a 42-28 win for his Prowlers. The victory was Greensboro's first road win in team history after 16 consecutive defeats away from home.

WR/DB CARLOS McNEARY had a big hand in another road win – his five touchdowns helped propel the Memphis Xplorers past the Louisville Fire, 60-46. Four of McNeary's five receptions went for TDs. He also rushed for a score on offense while making an interception and breaking up another pass on the defensive side of the ball.

Tallahassee Thunder OL/DL CEDRIC BYRD earns this week's Built Ford Tough award. The lineman had a fumble recovery which helped Tallahassee come back from an early deficit, then forced a fourth-quarter fumble that led to the Thunder's winning points.

Every team's coaching staff selects up to five players who display a "get it done" attitude after each game. At the end of the season, the league will honor the "Built Ford Tough" Man of the Year, a player who will win a Ford truck at the end of the season.
