CHICAGO - Louisville offensive specialist ROB MAGER, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton wide receiver/linebacker LEROY MCFADDEN and Rio Grande Valley offensive lineman/defensive lineman CURTIS JETER have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the First Round of the 2005 ArenaCup Playoffs.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mager (6-2, 200, Indianapolis), in his rookie season, helped the Louisville Fire defeat the Macon Knights 55-54 in the First Round of the 2005 ArenaCup Playoffs on Saturday night. Mager recorded 15 receptions for 167 yards and four touchdowns. Three of his touchdown receptions came in the fourth quarter as the Fire fought back from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit. Mager brought in a one-yard touchdown reception with just 42 seconds remaining in the game to cut the Macon lead to six points. After Louisville recovered an onside kick teammate Nate Green caught the winning touchdown for the comeback victory. Mager's 15 receptions was one shy of the record for most receptions in a postseason game. Half of the Fire's 30 completed passes on the night went to Mager. This is the third straight week a Fire player has earned a weekly honor. Quarterback Matt Sauk took home this same award last week and lineman Andrew Tippins earned the ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor the week before. Louisville faces divisional foe Manchester in the Semifinals this weekend.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
McFadden (6-4, 255, Michigan State), in his third season, has earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Week honors in just his first game with the Pioneers this season. Last season McFadden was a staple of the Pioneers offense, this season he rejoined the team for the playoffs to help make up for the loss of J.R. Thomas. McFadden came back in grand style. He rushed four times for four yards and one touchdown. McFadden also caught five passes for 47 yards. On defense he recorded a solo tackle and recovered a fumble in the endzone for the only score of the first quarter. Leroy McFadden was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Week in Week 3 of last season. He was also named to the American Conference All-af2 Second Team last season and the American Conference All-af2 First Team in 2003 at the WR/LB position. Teammate Jim Sodano was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week last week. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton plays the Florida Firecats this weekend in the Semifinals.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jeter (6-0, 290, Alabama-Birmingham), in his fifth season, stepped up his game for the playoffs in Rio Grande Valley's 56-38 victory over the Quad City Steamwheelers. The win was Rio Grande Valley's first postseason victory in franchise history. Jeter registered 3.0 tackles, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and a recovered fumble. Both of his forced fumbles came in the second half to help put away the Steamwheelers. His biggest play of the game came in the fourth quarter. Quad City just took possession after forcing the Dorados to turn the ball over on downs. With Quad City looking to shrink the Dorados' lead to just one possession Jeter broke through and sacked Quad City quarterback Sam Clemons, forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Two plays later the Dorados put the ball in the endzone to extend the lead to 18 points and clinch the game. The Dorados play the Tulsa Talons this Saturday.
