af2 Names Players of the Week

August 5, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Hawaii quarterback DARNELL ARCENEAUX, Cape Fear fullback/linebacker WILMONT PERRY and Mohegan offensive/defensive lineman CHARLIE COOK have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the First Round of the 2003 ArenaCup Playoffs.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Arceneaux (6-2, 205, Utah), in his second season, showed no ill-effects of a hand injury suffered midway through the regular season, passing for 229 yards as the Islanders dropped the Wichita Stealth to win its first-ever postseason game. Completing 16-of-25 passes, Arceneaux tossed six touchdowns to four different receivers, and he also rushed seven times for 10 yards and two more touchdowns. His longest touchdown pass of the night went for 34 yards to his brother ANTHONY ARCENEAUX, who ended up catching two touchdowns. With Arceneaux returning to form, the Islanders' offense has scored 55 or more points in consecutive weeks for the first time since Week 17 and 18 of the 2002 season. This is the second Offensive Player of the Week honor for Arceneaux, as he also won it in Week 1 of the 2002 season.

IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Perry (6-2, 250, Livingstone College), in his second season, displayed a spectacular all-around performance that kept his Wildcats within striking distance of the Wolves until the final buzzer last Saturday in Fayetteville. Trailing by three and 13 seconds left in game, the Wildcats lined up for an onside kick. Mohegan's GREG KRAUSE was unable to corral the ball and Perry was there to pick up the fumble. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the ensuing possession didn't result in any points and Mohegan went on to victory. Aside from the late game heroics, Perry rushed six times for 10 yards and three touchdowns to keep the Wildcats close all game and he registered 3.5 tackles. This is the Perry's second weekly honor of the season, as he also won the accolade back in Week 11.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Cook (6-foot, 290, C.W. Post), in his second season, became a hero for Mohegan with his last-second efforts against the Wildcats. After Perry recovered on onside kick with 13 seconds left in the game (as described above), the Wildcats had one last chance to score. For the Wildcats, the first play of that drive became the last play of the game as Cook plunged through the line and dropped QB BRYAN SNYDER for a six-yard loss. Unable to stop the clock, Cape Fear's season ended with that sack. For Cook, it was his second sack of the night to go along with his 3.5 tackles and one pass break-up. This is Cook's second ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Mohegan's Mel Long, Macon's Jacques Rumph, Arkansas' Ricky Hebert.

Ironman of the Week candidates included: Hawaii's Isaac White, Mohegan's Anthony Comer, Macon's Tremaine Neal, Arkansas' Lennie Johnson.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Hawaii's Kohei Satomi, Macon's Michael Caraway, Arkansas' Kahlil Carter.
