MOHEGAN WOLVES (9-4) AT RICHMOND SPEED (5-8)
FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2003-RICHMOND COLISEUM (11,088) 7:00 P.M ET
The Mohegan Wolves travel to Richmond to take on the Speed for the second time this season. In their previous meeting on May 16, the Wolves were able to put the brakes on the Speed by a score of 56-43. Quarterback and Game MVP GREG SMITH put on a great performance as he went 12-for-17 for 236 yards and six touchdowns to five different receivers. Although Richmond dominated in yardage and time of possession, the Wolves were able to come out on top due to strong offensive and defensive play especially with the help of ADT Defensive Player of the Game CHARLIE COOK who sacked Speed quarterback ROY JOHNSON three times for a loss of 26 yards. Mohegan has been quite strong lately, losing only one of their last five games and ranking first in the league in defensive points per game. This is an important American Conference battle as Mohegan sits just two games back of the Conquest in the American Northeast Division and the Speed is separated by just games in the American Atlantic Division. This is the final meeting of the regular season between these teams.
ALBANY CONQUEST (11-2) AT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS (5-8)
FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2003-FIRST UNION ARENA AT CASEY PLAZA (7,955) 7:00 P.M ET
Albany travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with the hope of conquering the Pioneers for their third meeting this season. Albany has taken the first two games of the series by handling the Pioneers 68-49 on May 3 and barely edging them last week by a score of 59-58. Albany hopes to carry the exciting momentum earned from last week's victory while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hopes to bounce back from the heartbreaking defeat in which the Pioneers were plagued by missed PATs. The Pioneers actually kept the lead throughout most of the game, but quarterback and Game MVP RYAN VENA came through once again for the Conquest as he led a comeback by going 20-for-30 for 342 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for three more before connecting with offensive specialist COREY HILL for a game winning touchdown with just fifteen seconds left on the clock. This game is an important American Northeast Division battle as the Conquest looks to stay on top while the Pioneers fight to keep playoff hopes alive. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton recognizes that Albany's two losses have come on the road. This is the final meeting of the regular season between these teams.
CHARLESTON SWAMP FOXES (6-7) AT BOSSIER CITY BATTLE WINGS (3-11)
FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2003-CENTURYTEL CENTER (12,500) 8:30 P.M ET
The Bossier City Battle Wings host the Charleston Swamp Foxes for the teams' first meeting this season and in af2 history. Both teams hope to bounce back from tough losses last week and Bossier City wishes to snap its six game losing streak. Charleston sits two games out of first place in the Atlantic Division and two games back in the Wild Card chase. The Swamp Foxes wish to break a tie with the Greensboro Prowlers in order to have a shot at a Wild Card bid with the playoffs just weeks away. Bossier City will not make this easy for the Swamp Foxes, especially with defensive specialist CHRIS SAMSON who is second in the league in tackles with 80.0. Charleston has found a star in quarterback JOHN TURMAN, who is fourth in the league in average passing yards per game. Turman has thrown for 2,592 yards and 52 touchdowns in just 10 games this season. He broke a team record with 367 passing yards last week. This is the first and final meeting between these teams of the regular season.
