RICHMOND SPEED (5-6) AT WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS (4-7)
FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2003 - FIRST UNION ARENA AT CASEY PLAZA (7,955) 7:00 P.M. ET
The Speed travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the Pioneers for the second time this season. In their first meeting on May 31st, the Pioneers barely edged the Speed by a score of 50-49. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held the lead throughout the game, but the Speed would not stop fighting, especially when quarterback ROY JOHNSON scored on a one-yard touchdown run with no time left on the clock to bring the Speed within victory. However, Richmond's chance to take the lead on a Johnson pass was demolished when he was intercepted. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton quarterback CHRIS BODEN played an excellent game as he went 21-for-34 for 230 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for two more touchdowns. The defensive specialists of the Pioneers helped the team keep the lead, as they combined for two interceptions, four pass deflections, and three sacks. Both teams are coming off of impressive wins last week, and they hope to carry that momentum. This is an important game for the Speed as they fight to break a tie with the Charleston Swamp Foxes for third place in the American Atlantic and stay in the Wildcard chase. This is the final meeting between these teams in the regular season.
MEMPHIS XPLORERS (4-7) AT BOSSIER CITY BATTLE WINGS (3-9)
FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2003 - CENTURYTEL CENTER (12,500) 8:30 P.M. ET
The Bossier City Battle Wings host the Memphis Xplorers for a National Central Division battle. Memphis is coming off of a victory last week while the Battle Wings hope to snap a four game losing streak. In the teams' first meeting this season on May 30th, Memphis handled Bossier City quite well as they defeated them 62-35. Memphis quarterback WILL BURCH threw for 202 yards and four touchdowns to three different receivers. Bossier City defensive specialist CHRIS SAMSON put on an excellent performance as he recorded nine solo tackles, two pass breakups, and one tackle for a loss of seven yards. Samson is currently first in the league in tackles with 70.5. Memphis offensive specialist JOHNNY LOPER also played a great game as he caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown while rushing for one as well. This is the final meeting of the regular season between these teams.
