ACHL comes to Savannah

The Atlantic Coast Hockey League comes to Savannah, Georgia this week for two regular season games at the Savannah Civic Center. The two league games are considered "test" games by the ACHL to guage the interest in placing an ACHL franchise in Savannah in time for the 2003-2004 ACHL season. The two games are:

Friday, February 21st @ 7:30PM: Macon Trax vs. Winston-Salem Parrots

and

Saturday, February 22nd @ 7:30PM: Cape Fear Fire Antz vs. Winston-Salem

Seals Clinch Playoff Spot:

The Orlando Seals became the first team in the ACHL to clinch a playoff spot for the ACHL playoffs which will begin in mid-march. The Seals are in first place with a record of 36 wins and 12 losses. The team is currently riding a three-game winning streak and are 9-1 in their last ten games.

Fire Antz Post Largest ACHL Crowd:

The Cape Fear Fire Antz of Fayetteville, North Carolina posted the ACHL's largest crowd of the year when 5741 were in attendance at the Crown Coliseum for the Fire Antz 6-3 victory over Macon on Saturday 2/15.

Ice Bears Keep on Packin' Them In:

The Knoxville Ice Bears had their second straight sellout on Saturday 2/15 as 4755 saw the Ice Bears fall to Orlando 3-2. The Ice Bears have now had ten crowds of 4000+ at the Knoxville Civic Center.

Barracudas Coaching Change:

The Jacksonville Barracudas became the third team in the ACHL this season to make a coaching change when former NHL veteran, Ron Duguay, replaced Kurt Wickenheiser on February 12th. After dropping his first two games, the 45 year-old Duguay got his first victory on Saturday night (2/15), a 5-3 win in Winston-Salem.

ACHL Player of the Week:

Forward Tommy Stewart of the Macon Trax is the Atlantic Coast Hockey League Player of the Week. Stewart's week included a hat trick and nine points overall (4 goals & 5 assists) as the Trax won two of three (and seven of their last ten) to catapult into third place in the ACHL standings.Stewart currently leads the ACHL in scoring with 29 goals & 45 assists for 74 points.

ACHL Goaltender of the Week:

The Orlando Seals Mike Correia is the Atlantic Coast Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. Correia, from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, won two of the Seals three games last week, stooping 57 of 62 shots in the process. On the season, his record has improved to 10-1 with a 2.59 goals against average, 1 shutout, and a 90.4% save percentage.
