Abshire, Mungro Sign with Northern Kentucky

September 12, 2011 - Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) - Northern Kentucky Monsters News Release

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY - The Northern Kentucky Monsters, of the Ultimate Indoor Football League, have continued to add weapons to its roster.

Head coach Brian Schmidt added two All-UIFL selections, first-teamer Rashaud Mungro and second-teamer Butch Abshire.

Abshire was a two-way star for Northern Kentucky a season ago en route to earning league honors as a defensive back. He recorded three interceptions and 11 pass break-ups along with 29 tackles in just 10 games. Offensively, he added 31 catches for 334 yards and six touchdowns.

"Butch did everything for us last year," said Schmidt. "He was a lockdown defensive back. Then was pressed into playing receiver for us due to injury, and did an incredible job there. With an 18-man roster, you need flexibility and players that can play multiple positions and Butch gives us that."

Offensive lineman Mungro becomes the third Eastern Kentucky player to make the move to Northern Kentucky. He joins James Jenkins and Aric Evans on the Monsters' roster.

"Rashaud was a key piece of the puzzle for us to go out and get," said Schmidt. "Protecting your quarterback is so important and Rashaud was one of the top linemen in the league last year."

Northern Kentucky plays its games in the Bank of Kentucky Center, marking the second straight season a UIFL team will call the on-campus arena at Northern Kentucky University home. The season starts in March, and the schedule will be released soon.

The UIFL will kick off its second season in early March with two eight-team divisions. Its inaugural season ended with no missed games or teams folding, as Saginaw claimed the first Ultimate Bowl, sponsored by Trophy Awards.
