ABA's New Overtime Rule Used for First Time

December 20, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Tampa Bay Strong Dogs News Release

Harlem, NY. On Sunday, the ABA's new overtime rule - 3-TEN AND OUT - was used for the first time in a game between the Rochester RazorSharks and the Harlem Strong Dogs. The rule, created by ABA co-founder Dick Tinkham, was designed to speed up overtimes. All players are eligible. The first overtime is three minutes running clock stopped only for foul shots. If there is a tie at the end of the three minutes, the first team to ten wins. With .01 remaining in the first overtime and Rochester behind by one point, Rochester was at the foul line with 3 foul shots (4 team fouls in the overtime provides 3 foul shots). They made the first to tie. Missed the next two. Sending the game into the Ten and Out. In a back and fourth battle, the score ended 10-7...and you know who won as history was made with this very exciting new ABA rule. According to Tom Chichester, ABA Director of Officials, "We knew that we had something special with 3-Ten and Out. But we didn't really know how special it would be until the rule was tested. The level of play, the intensity at both ends of the court, and excitement were amazing. The rule worked as we had hoped it would work...and hope that we have some additional overtimes that end in a tie. The fans will love it." For more information, visit www.abalive.com.
