ABA names division after Marvin "Bad News" Barnes

April 8, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the second division to be named after one of the original ABA superstars will be named the MARVIN BARNES Division. Known as "Bad News" Barnes during his 144 ABA games prior to joining the NBA, he was named ABA Rookie of the Year and ABA All-Rookie Team in 1974-1975. He co-holds the ABA All-Time record for most 2-point field goals in one game with 27 vs. the Memphis Sounds. He was also a member of the 1974-75 ABA All-Pro Team and a 2-time ABA All Star with the Spirits of St. Louis before going onto a great NBA career. His ABA career average was 24.1 ppg, 13.4 rpg. According to Dick Tinkham, one of the original ABA co-founders, "Marvin came into the league just prior to the four teams merging into the NBA. But in a short period of time, he made his mark and established himself as one of the most exciting players in a league filled with superstars. Along with Freddie, he is certainly deserving of this honor."
