ABA Ask the CEO
May 10, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Answer: Thanks for the questions. The ABA has a pretty extensive expansion program. We anticipate having as many as 100 teams in the next several years. That keeps us very busy.
Obviously, there has been great interest in our having a WABA to complement the ABA and we have thought about it. However, the need for a WABA is not as acute as the need for the ABA was and is. The ticket prices for NBA games had skyrocketed; the number of players getting to play professional basketball was very limited. The ABA brings exciting, high quality professional basketball to fans in three countries at very affordable prices making it possible for families, students, seniors, military and others to enjoy great basketball. And this year, over 700 players will play.
On the other hand, the WNBA also provides affordable professional basketball and an opportunity for women to play. If you've ever been to a WNBA game, you know how good they are and how much fun they are to watch. The action is much like an ABA game with terrific teamwork and great skills. Since they play in the spring-summer, however, there is an opening for a fall/winter women's league - which is why we are giving it consideration. The talent is certainly there and the women do provide fun and exciting basketball. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
