ABA Announces Boston as 13th Expansion Team
April 6, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-Founder, today announced officially that Boston will be the 13th expansion team in the rapidly-growing pro basketball league though the news was leaked earlier by Paul Revere IX. According to Newman, "Just kidding about Paul, but we are absolutely thrilled to have a team in Boston and Massachusetts, the "birthplace of basketball." He continued, "Jon Naismith, the grandson of the founder of basketball attended our recent Expansion Team meeting and was pleased to know that the possibility existed. Jon, the possibility is now reality."
The team will be owned and managed by a group of area businesspeople including Daniel Savage. Dan was a successful high school coach in Massachusetts for eight years as well as Director of Recreation for the Town of Bourne, in charge of one of the top men's basketball leagues in New England. He received his degree in Sports Management from Becker Collage and owns Savage Sports, a company in the business of basketball leagues and tournaments. He served this past season as Assistant Coach of the ABA Las Vegas Rattlers. Savage stated, "I can't tell you how excited we are about bringing an ABA team to Boston. We recognize the popularity of the Boston Celtics; I've been a fan for life. But we think that the fans will also enjoy the fast-paced, high scoring ABA with its unique rules and especially its affordability. Our league is designed for families and kids; we'll co-exist beautifully."
Another owner is Pat Savage, Dan's brother, who is a manager of a National Sales team for Nestle Waters of North America and has been involved in basketball at the High School and Collegiate level as both a player and a coach. Pat added, "Co-owning a pro team with my brother is a dream come true. We have a lot of work to do, but we know we can be successful. The basketball fans of Boston will truly enjoy the ABA game as well as the committment we will make to the community."
The third partner, Ken Sherman, owner of Sherman Financial and River Mortgage concluded, "Basketball is both a sport and business aznd I think the group we've put together can maximize the potential of both. We will be announcing our team name, venue and tryout camps and other information shortly. We're looking primarily for former area players to fill our roster - BC, BU, Harvard, U Mass, U Conn, Rhode Island, Providence and others. It will be thrilling to watch them play together after competing in the high school and college ranks."
The team is also seeking qualified people for its Marketing and Operations Department. Those interested can contact Dan Savage at savagesports@juno.com or call (702) 809-7915.
