ABA Adds Second Atlanta Area Expansion Team
August 21, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA co-founder, today announced the addition of a second Atlanta area team for the upcoming season to replace the Pensacola Aviators in the Southeastern Division. According to Newman, "When the Pensacola hockey team refused to budge on its opposition to the Aviators playing in the Civic Center and thus depriving Pensacola fans of fast-paced and affordable professional basketball this season, we made the decision to bring in another team in the same division. Fortunately, we had a terrific ownership group ready and eager to play this season."
Newman continued, "Headed by attorney Lisa Van Wagner, and ably assisted by Coach Brian Couso, Rufus Greer, Bernard Bynum, and Dennis Stewart, this management group has everything in place and is confident that it can put together all of the elements needed to be successful this year. The Atlanta area is huge, basketball is very popular, and it can certainly support two ABA teams. Ricardo Richardson, ABA Executive Vice President, will be in Atlanta this week top assist in putting together the various elements needed for a quick start."
Van Wagner added, "We have much to do and are very pleased that the ABA has given us this opportunity. We will be making many announcements shortly relating to the team name, staffing requirement, venue, tryout camps, press conferences, ticket sales, sponsorships and other things. One thing's for sure - we have a very strong, very experienced group of people with us and know that we will have one of the premiere operations in the ABA."
