November 29, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it has added Monterey, California to its fast-growing list of expansion teams for the 2009 season. According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "The interest in the ABA has never been greater. The idea of being able to see outstanding professional players, such high quality basketball at such affordable prices has attracted a whole new group of great owners, and Wash Stallworth, Jr., the owner of the new Monterey team, is an example. Wash has a tremendous background in basketball and coaching at the military, high school and college level as well as a great business background. He will do well in the fabulous city of Monterey."

Wash was drafted into the Army in March 1969 and retired in January 1993, having served his country for 24 years. Starting as a player in the service in 1969, he moved into coaching in 1973 in the military and coached both the men's and women's Hanau basketball teams including winning some championships.

He also coached the Rhein Main Air Force Base Christmas Classic Champions, the V-Corp Champions and USAREUR Champions, and coached at German Bundes Leaguia and Fort McClellan, and coached the 2nd Infantry Division Champion, 8th Army Champion, All-Army Champion before becoming Asst Coach at Salinas High School, Hartnell College, Monterey Peninsula College and took his Monterey Bay team to the State-Play-off all four years, Monterey Bay League Champions in 2005, Wilson Memorial Tournament Champions and Gilroy Memorial Tournament Champions. As one friend stated, "Wash can coach with the best of them, he will have a strong ABA team for sure."

He is a graduate of Central Texas College in Kileen, TX as well as a graduate of Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey CA, with degrees in Theory of Coaching and Physical Education.

"It has been a dream of mine to own a professional basketball team," stated Stallworth. "I have watched the ABA grow in California with teams in San Francisco, East Bay, Modesto, Fresno, a couple in LA,

Maywood, San Diego - and I know that there are several other cities in the works. It should be a great experience, very healthy competition and we are going to work very hard to make this team strong and our community proud. We are ready and set to go."
