AAPBL announces Summer League

AAPBL President, Worth Christie, announced today that Billings, Montana will be host to the 2005 AAPBL Summer League to be held fom July 7 to July 24.

According to Christie, "Billings was chosen because they managed to put together a strong cooperative effort that includes the City of Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana State University - Billings, the Billings Public School District, the staff at MetraPark Arena, the Billings Chamber of Commerce and the City of Billings Transportation Department."

"The summer league will be a comprehensive developmental summer league for players who are looking for an opportunity to be seen." said, Christie. "This summer league will give players an opportunity to play in games plus receive intensive instruction designed to improve their skills." Christie went on to say, "People in the industry we have spoken with believe this summer league will not only be a chance for basketball fans in the Billings area to enjoy good basketball but we expect basketball enthusiasts from all over the country to come to Billngs to watch this summer league."

Not only will the AAPBL Summer League be an opportunity for players to showcase and develop their skills but it will also provide the same opportunity for broadcasters and referees interested in the professional game. Broadcasters will have the opportunity to do play by play and receive instruction from professionals in sports broadcasting. Referees who want to work at the professional level will work games and receive instruction about calling the professional game.

"The Summer League will afford players, broadcasters and referees the chance to better their skills and serve as an audition for the AAPBL," Christie, said. "We expect several broadcasters and referees to be hired by teams in the league and by the league, respectively." "I wouldn't be surprised to see players from all over the United States and from abroad taking part in this league with a number of them being invited to training camps."

All AAPBL teams will have a summer league team with a roster of 16 players participating in the league. After two days of practice every team will play one game per day with intensive classroom and skill development work being a part of the daily schedule. At the conclusion of the camp each coach will have first right to invite as many as four players from their summer league roster to their training camp.

Participants taking part in the AAPBL Summer League will receive two weeks of intensive training. Those partipating in the league will receive the training plus room and board with their registration fee. Those participants who earn a spot on an AAPBL opening night roster and those broadcasters and referees who are hired to work in the AAPBL will receive a refund of their registration fee.
